A wet garden or roof terrace is one of the most common winter problems. Rain, poor drainage and intensive use quickly lead to mud, puddles and slippery areas. But do you still want to enjoy your garden to the fullest, rain or shine? Fortunately, there are sustainable solutions that tackle this problem structurally.
During winter, the soil is saturated and, due to the minimal number of hours of sunshine, that water hardly evaporates. Clay soils and roof terraces without the correct structure in particular retain moisture, resulting in mud and moss formation.
Drainage can help, but often requires major work and does not always completely solve the problem if the top layer remains wet.
A hard surface prevents mud, but often makes the area slippery, gives it a cold appearance and can still retain puddles if the surface does not drain properly. It also prevents rainwater from flowing smoothly into the soil, where it can replenish the soil water deficit.
Gravel allows water to pass through, but sinks into soft sub-layers and mixes with mud when used intensively.
Artificial grass is often mistakenly regarded as paving, because this ground cover offers a clever combination of comfort and functionality. Thanks to its water-permeable backing, rainwater can drain away quickly (up to 60 litres per minute per square metre), while the stable substructure prevents mud from forming. This means you can use your garden again much sooner after heavy rainfall!

Frequently asked question: Can artificial grass cause waterlogging?
No, provided it is installed correctly with a draining foundation, artificial grass actually regulates water. For example, when there is a lot of rain, the turf will ensure a slower flow, so that the soil underneath becomes saturated less quickly. Depending on the type of sandy soil in your region, a tailor-made solution is always offered.

The customers who specifically contacted us to find a solution for their muddy gardens all had one thing in common: soil that contained a lot of clay, which made it difficult for water to find its way to the deeper layers. We always started by assessing the soil on site. The solution varies depending on the composition. In some gardens, it is sufficient to dig deeper and provide a richer sandy loam bed. In other cases, it was necessary to add an extra layer of Resibase, which gives the installation additional buffering capacity.
A wet garden or roof terrace rarely occurs by chance or because of one rainy winter. It is usually a combination of soil composition, choice of materials and use that reveal their limitations in wet conditions. Persistent rainfall makes these weak spots even more visible. By using this period to understand how water behaves in your garden or on your terrace, you can make better choices. A well-thought-out approach, with attention to drainage and stability, not only reduces maintenance, but also provides more comfort and reliability throughout the year. You can always count on our expertise to guide you in making the right choice!
