A new home means a fresh start. And whilst everything inside is slowly taking shape, the garden of a new-build home often still looks bare and impersonal. By this stage, inspiration and motivation can sometimes be in short supply, and the blank canvas that is your garden can feel rather overwhelming. How do you turn this empty outdoor space into an inviting garden that you can enjoy all year round? Don’t worry – with a good plan, the right materials and smart choices, you’ll go a long way. We’ve put together a few of our tips for you below!

1. First, decide on the layout of your new garden

Before you start paving and planting, it’s important to think about the layout. Where do you want to sit, eat and relax? And do you need space for children to play? What overall atmosphere are you aiming for?

Also take the garden’s location into account. A sunny spot is ideal for a patio, whilst a shady corner might be just right for plants that need less sun. By creating different zones, your garden will have more structure and the space will also feel larger.

Tip: To get a better idea of whether a particular layout will work, you could, for example, use string and stakes to mark out the area according to the dimensions you have in mind. An empty garden can sometimes feel larger or smaller, so you only really get a sense of whether something ‘feels right’ once you visualise it more clearly.

2. Combine different materials

A garden in a new-build property often has a minimalist design. By using different materials and textures, you can add warmth and character to it. Think of wooden features, elegant planters, natural stone, ceramic tiles or a pergola.

Differences in height also create a playful effect. A raised border or a planter can instantly make a simple garden more interesting. Hedges or shrubs also immediately add an extra dimension.

3. Choose plants that suit you

Plants bring your garden to life, but above all, choose them based on how much time you want to spend on maintenance. For example, combine evergreen shrubs with perennials and ornamental grasses. This way, your garden will remain attractive even in the colder months.

Tip: A low-maintenance garden doesn’t mean you have to compromise on atmosphere: you can achieve a lot with just a few carefully chosen statement plants.

4. Don’t forget the practical side

A beautiful garden must, of course, also be practical. So, when designing the garden for your new-build home, be sure to think about lighting, an outside tap, power sockets and plenty of storage space.

A comfortable lounge area makes the garden inviting, whilst good outdoor lighting ensures that you can enjoy your outdoor space in the evenings too.

5. Finish off your garden with artificial grass

Once all the major decisions have been made, it’s time for the finishing touches. Artificial grass is a low-maintenance ground cover that instantly gives a new garden a green and well-tended look.

The big advantage is that you immediately have a neat, green surface without having to mow, fertilise, scarify, etc. Artificial grass is therefore a good fit for a garden where convenience and appearance are key.

Ideally, lay the artificial grass as one of the final elements of your garden. First, put the paving, borders, plants and furniture in place, and then add the green surface as the icing on the cake. This instantly transforms a bare new-build garden into a complete, atmospheric outdoor space.

A garden for a new-build home doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a smart layout, add greenery and atmosphere, and choose materials that suit your lifestyle. With the right foundation and a lovely finishing touch, you’ll enjoy your new garden from the very first moment.
