5 Winter tips for maintaining your garden

Winter is a time when your garden often gets less attention, but the saying ‘well begun is half won’ applies here. If you maintain your garden properly during these colder months, you will be rewarded with an outdoor space in top shape once spring arrives again. So which essential steps should you take now to enjoy that radiant oasis in the near future? Below we list five comprehensive tips for preparing and maintaining your garden for the winter:

Kunsthaag NL-11. Pruning and tidying up

Winter is an ideal time to prune your trees and shrubs, when the worst frosts are pretty much over (think February-March). In the colder months, the plants in our garden go into a dormant period, and by pruning just then, you give plants a better start in spring. It is important to remove dead branches and diseased parts of plants to prevent the spread of fungi. More information on how to recognise fungi on trees and shrubs and how to solve garden problems such as mosses, pests & fungi can be found here.

Don't forget to clean up fallen leaves and branches, too. These can become a breeding ground for diseases and pests. However, leaves that are healthy can be used as mulch in your borders. This provides natural protection against frost and enriches the soil.

2. Protect vulnerable plants

Use fleece or mulch to protect frost-prone plants. These materials make sure the roots of your plants are less likely to freeze. You can move potted plants to a sheltered location, such as a shed or veranda. Don't have an indoor location? Then you can also place the plants against a wall, where they will be sheltered from the wind.

3. Take care of your lawn

If you have a natural lawn, avoid walking on it during frost. The grass may break and struggle to recover. Rake away fallen leaves to prevent moss formation. Artificial grass? That's fortunately low-maintenance in winter! You don't have to worry about frost, and with a soft brush you can easily remove leaves and other debris. Artificial grass will always look green and neat.

4. Prepare your tools for winter

Winter is also the time to maintain your garden tools. Clean your shears, rakes and spades thoroughly to prevent rust. Sharpen pruning shears so they are ready for use in spring. Then store all your tools in a dry place until spring. Well-maintained tools not only work more efficiently, they also last longer and are therefore better for the environment!

5. Think of our little friends out there

In winter, birds, hedgehogs and other animals need extra help:

With these comprehensive tips, your garden will be well cared for even in winter. By paying a little extra attention now, you ensure that your garden can shine in spring. Take the time to enjoy the peace and quiet of your garden and make plans for the coming season!
