Moss in artificial grass: how to remove it easily?
Artificial grass offers numerous advantages, including minimal maintenance. Nevertheless, moss may grow in your artificial grass. Persistent rain, shady areas and little sun (hello Belgian summer of 2024) can play a role here. However, this raises questions, such as: how does that moss get on artificial grass and, more importantly, how do you remove it?
Below, we go over the causes of artificial grass and give you 4 practical tips to remove moss from your artificial grass! That way, come rain or shine, you will enjoy a beautiful lawn. See the difference below!
How does moss form in artificial grass?
When artificial grass is installed according to the rules of art, moss or weeds should normally not have a chance to grow through the artificial grass. This is because the stabilisation fabric under the artificial grass stops weed growth. Nevertheless, moss can sometimes nestle between the grass fibres. The culprit? The wind. Moss spores can end up on artificial grass through the air and settle there, especially in damp and shady areas. Urban gardens that have a lot of shade throughout the year, lawns that are under tall trees or a wet season can therefore potentially trigger extra moss growth.
Here's how to prevent moss in your Resigrass
Have you just bought a new artificial grass mat from Resigrass and want to prevent moss from growing? It all starts with a proper installation. Resigrass offers a professional artificial grass installation service, so you can be sure that the grass will be installed correctly. Even if you want to install your artificial grass yourself, you can count on our expertise and a detailed explanation of the installation, so you know exactly how to proceed!
Although you cannot exclude moss completely, you can make it more difficult for it to settle in your artificial grass. It is essential to brush the artificial grass regularly with a good, slightly rough broom. This will remove leaves, twigs and loose moss spores before they have a chance to grow.
With consistent maintenance and Resigrass' expertise, you can enjoy a moss-free artificial turf and continue to enjoy the benefits artificial grass has to offer.

Removing moss from artificial turf
See that it has found its way into your grass carpet after all? Then you can easily remove moss from your artificial grass with these 4 practical tips:
- Soft moss killer: If moss or weeds do develop due to organic material left behind, you can easily remove them with a normal and not too aggressive moss or weed killer. You apply this according to the product's instructions.
- Tackling deeper silt: It helps to remove leaves, seeds and other organic material from time to time. If you don't, this waste will form a silt layer on which possible moss and weeds can grow. To tackle this silt layer, a Kärcher/high-pressure cleaner is your best friend: with a high-pressure cleaner you can give the turf a deep clean. When doing so, use the ‘wider’ jet so there is not too much force (which could potentially damage the artificial grass fibre) and that works to loosen and remove the deeper lying dirt.
- Resiclean, the icing on the cake: For deep cleaning, you can also use the Resiclean organic emulsion, which removes the remaining, deeper particles in an ecological way. You dilute this emulsion with water according to the specified quantities and then mist it on your artificial turf pitch. The enzymes in this emulsion ensure that the remaining layer of silt is broken down into smaller particles, which then flow away with rainwater through the interpits of the turf. Resiclean is completely natural and organic, making it a gentle solution for the environment and the soil!
- Maintenance by the Resigrass team: if you don't feel like doing all the work yourself, you can call in our team for a deep cleaning of the turf (see the before and after results below). The team will analyse the situation and then work through a step-by-step plan tailored to your turf. This way, your lawn will look like new again and will last for some time!
